Most popular team sports around the world

I’ve been compiling a list of sports teams based on sport and country for a project I am working on for Fan History. The selection of teams now is around 33,000 teams. This information has come from FIFA, the NCAA, Wikipedia, sports federations and league websites. I think it could easily hit 40,000 if I spent some more time building the list. This list includes professional, semi-professional and some amateur teams that play in collegiate, national and international competitions.

Given all that, I was kind of curious… What countries are the most popular team sports? Based on this sample, I got created the following chart:

Number of teams by sports

There are a couple of issues with this list, especially when it comes to bicycling. I’m not familiar enough with the sport to understand the different versions or standard spellings for those variations.

How did Australian rules football get in twice? Once as the seventh most popular team sport, and again way down with only a 1000.

With cycling, there is road cycling, track cycling, kirin, and lots of the cycling variants with the Olympics.

  • Because I used excel to count and didn't refine it. Australian rules football. Australian rules football . They are treated differently. :(

Cycling has those issues, yes. Trying to sort these things out is a bit of a pain. Swimming for example: Lots of swim teams. But in the US, the collegiate system groups swimming and diving together. On Wikipedia, some articles will say just national cycling team. It could come down to how the national organization organizes itself. :/

  • Hi. Interesting to say the least!

Bit puzzled why there are over 4x the number of aussie rules teams than cricket. But hey ho!

  • There are some things that, looking at, I realized I had problems with. Rugby union, when I started adding teams for it, actually came up to number four.

I don't think that there are that many Cricket teams out there. If there is, I'm not easily finding lists of them. :( I'd love to have more.

    Let me see.

There are national teams in the elite competition, there are reserve teams. And there are local and provincal teams, as well as the ones for suburbs or states.

And then there's one day cricket and 20-20 (like in the Indian Premier League).

  • I'm at 392 on my list with about 45,000 teams.

Outside of national teams (for men and women), I have information on :

    County Championship
    Indian Cricket League
    Indian Premier League
    International Cricket Council
    MTN Domestic Competitions
    Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association
    National Cricket League of Bangladesh
    Pro Cricket
    Ranji Trophy
    Sahara Elite League
    United States Pro Cricket League

I would believe that there are a lot more teams than 392... but I just cannot find a really comprehensive list of every cricket team around. :(
